T Flying Solo on Controversial Issues in Science, Medicine and Technology
Our last unit in CWI will deal with issues within science, medicine and technology. This in and of itself - like all other topics in this course - is sufficient enough to fill an entire semester.
We live in a world of rapid change in technology and science. Often times the present moral and social situation are not always in step with these rapid changes. As a consequence controversy ensues as to whether a particular technology, medicine or procedure should procede without some sort of regulation, or whether it should procede at all.
You will be given three classes to complete this final paper for this course. This will form part of your final test for this course. That is you will not have a final essay exam, rather you will have to write a final "research" paper. Your grade will be out of sixty marks. For each class you will have to turn in a part of what it is you will be writing.
Class I:
You must generate a research question that is specific and is controversial. For example, "Should NASA continue to pursue manned space exploratioin?", or "Should parents always be told of genetic testing availability?" (Neither of this questioins may be used for your paper). Your question is to be posted below. The quality and depth of your question will be graded out of ten. Use of class time in preparing this question will also be considered in evaluation. No two questions can be alike. You create yours on your own.
The question you create must deal with technology, science or medicine. Due: Before the end of class on January 6th, 2009. 5 marks.
